Limehouse Basin

Article 25

I’ve been privileged to create artwork over the past few years for 10x10 London, the flagship fundraising event for charity Article 25.

Each year, a section of London is divided into a 10x10 grid with 100 squares. These are then allocated to architects, designers and artists who in turn capture their unique view on the city through various artistic methods.

I've always been fascinated by abstract shapes and colours created by the objects that surround us in our urban environment, and the 2015 10x10 square was no exception. Limehouse Basin was central to my square which meant I was naturally drawn to the lock with its link to The Thames and rich seafaring history. Taking inspiration from the shadows and light cast through the structure of the lock, the image has taken on an almost architectural feel with the straight lines merging into the water creating the illusion of one solid structure. As if looking at the slats of a building, it’s unclear where the metal/wooden girders of the lock end and The Thames begins.

My photography was featured with the other 99 pieces of unique artwork on 1 December 2015 where they were auctioned off to the highest bidders.

All the funds raised from the evening go to the charity Article 25 which designs and oversees the construction of safe, appropriate buildings in the developing world that ensure basic needs like health are met. For further information about the 10x10 auction and Article 25 visit www.10x10london.com
